Varsity sports multimedia reporter
The USA Today Network seeks a digital journalist to cover varsity sports and issues in compelling, intriguing and unique ways for the York Daily Record.
This reporter will be part of a two-person team and will own prep sports coverage, building a beat that is focused on storytelling, not events and games. This reporter will produce high-impact journalism that answers the ‘why’ or ‘how,’ not the ‘what.’ Games can still be important and results still matter but that isn't our focus. This beat will emphasize recruiting, issues, news, trending stories, videos, live coverage, championship moments, players off the field and more.
Our prep coverage centers on 23 high schools located in York and Adams counties that are a part of the York Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association.
An average week of coverage could include a compelling human feature, mobile-friendly content such as rankings or Athlete of the Week polls, live tweeting and video highlights from high school football, a look at the relationship between AAU basketball and varsity teams or a deep dive into the life of an athlete outside of their sport.
- The ideal candidate will produce an entire package – story, photos, video, podcast, etc. – or tell the story on whichever platform fits.
- This journalist will use analytics, search engine optimization and other tools to really understand and target the right audiences.
- A strong video and photo background is a must. This reporter will use social media channels to build a personal brand.
- This reporter also will serve readers across the state, as a part of a Pennsylvania sports team, with stories that transcend specific teams and schools. This reporter will cover news stories as seasons and needs permit and will go after breaking or trending news with urgency.
- This position is Monday-Friday, with the occasional need to work nights/weekends as seasons and schedules dictate.
The York Daily Record office is located in York County, Pa., about 40 minutes south of Harrisburg, two hours west of Philadelphia and an hour north of Baltimore, Maryland.
To join our team, send resume and samples of published stories and digital work to Lyzz Stallings, Central/Eastern Pa. Regional Sports Editor, at estallings@gannett.com.
